AP Govt Moves to Save Nallamala’s Rare Blue Wonder, the Peacock Tarantula

The dense forests of Andhra Pradesh in Nallamala are home to a little-known natural treasure, the Peacock Tarantula , a rare blue-coloured spider found only in the Eastern Ghats . The state government has now initiated a focused conservation programme to protect this critically endangered species.

Under the guidance of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and the environmental leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, the Forest Department, in collaboration with the Eastern Ghats Wildlife Society, has launched a scientific survey inside the Nagarjunasagar–Srisailam Tiger Reserve.

The species is known for its striking metallic blue body and yellow patterns, making it one of the most visually distinctive spiders in the region. However, its habitat is extremely limited, confined to select forest pockets in the Nallamala landscape.

Conservationists warn that the species is at high risk of extinction due to habitat destruction, deforestation, and illegal wildlife trade, driven in part by demand in the exotic pet market.

The ongoing survey aims to document its population, identify key habitats, and assess environmental pressures affecting its survival. The data collected will be used to develop long-term protection strategies and potential conservation zones within the reserve.

Experts also highlight its ecological role in controlling insect populations, which helps maintain forest balance. Any decline in its numbers could have wider effects on the ecosystem.

Officials say the initiative also includes awareness efforts among local and tribal communities to support protection measures.

The move is being seen as an important step in expanding conservation focus to lesser-known but ecologically significant species, strengthening biodiversity protection in the Eastern Ghats.
