AP Govt Focuses on Sustainable Growth in Aquaculture Sector

The Andhra Pradesh government is working on measures to strengthen the state’s aquaculture sector amid rising costs and growing challenges faced by shrimp and fish farmers.

During a high-level review meeting on Thursday, State Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu discussed key issues affecting the industry with officials and sector experts. The meeting focused on increasing shrimp feed prices , shortages of raw materials , export challenges, and the financial burden on aqua farmers.

The minister said farmers are under severe pressure due to the sharp rise in feed costs during the current summer crop season. At the same time, feed manufacturers are also struggling with higher raw material prices, creating stress across the industry.

Atchannaidu assured stakeholders that the government would take balanced decisions to protect farmers’ interests while ensuring the stability of the aquaculture sector. Suggestions from farmers, exporters , feed manufacturers, and industry representatives were reviewed to identify practical solutions.

The minister said the state is prioritizing the supply of quality feed and seed by strengthening technology-based monitoring systems. CCTV surveillance is being introduced at shrimp hatcheries to improve transparency, while IoT-based monitoring systems will be expanded to enhance quality control.

He also announced that Andhra Pradesh would seek support from the Centre to tackle international challenges impacting the industry. The state plans to submit a detailed report on issues such as genetically modified soybean imports, fishmeal availability, import licensing, and measures to improve the competitiveness of seafood exports in global markets.

The government remains committed to supporting aquaculture farmers and boosting exports through transparent and industry-focused policies, the minister added.
