Andhra Pradesh Plans Tariff Relief, Expands Renewable Push: Energy Minister
Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar on Sunday said the state government is working on a plan to bring down electricity costs by up to ₹1 per unit ahead of the next general elections. He said the initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on consumers while improving the overall efficiency of the power sector.
Speaking on ongoing energy reforms, the minister said the coalition government, under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu , is focusing on consumer-friendly policies and long-term sector stability. He emphasized that the administration is committed to ensuring that electricity pricing remains stable and does not move upward during its tenure.
He contrasted Andhra Pradesh’s approach with other states, stating that while many regions are increasing tariffs through true-up adjustments , the state is instead adopting a “true-down” mechanism to pass benefits to consumers wherever possible. According to him, this approach reflects the government’s intention to prioritize affordability.
Ravi Kumar also highlighted the state’s growing focus on renewable energy expansion , particularly in solar and wind power projects. He said the government is actively encouraging investments in clean energy and strengthening infrastructure to support future demand.
As part of distribution improvements, the minister noted that new substations are being planned in areas facing low-voltage issues , based on local consumption patterns. He added that the primary goal is to ensure reliable and uninterrupted power supply across both urban and rural regions.
Referring to past performance, he alleged that the previous administration had burdened consumers through multiple tariff revisions and inefficient power purchase decisions, leading to nine tariff hikes during its tenure.
The minister also referred to the Centre’s “Surya Ghar” rooftop solar initiative , implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , which aims to expand solar adoption nationwide. He said Andhra Pradesh has been allocated 20 lakh connections under the programme, contributing significantly to the national target of one crore households.
