The Andhra Pradesh government has extended its “Ragi Java” nutrition programme for government school students by another five years , until April 2029 , reinforcing its focus on child health and food security .

A Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU ) was signed in Vijayawada on Monday between the state government and the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust . IT Minister Nara Lokesh and Managing Trustee RJ Ratnakar exchanged documents, highlighting their commitment to student welfare and holistic development.

The programme currently benefits over 30 lakh students across nearly 44,000 government schools, where a nutritious ragi-based drink is served every morning. Officials say the initiative has improved students’ physical health and contributed to better attendance.

The Trust supplies ragi flour and jaggery free of cost to all districts, enabling schools to prepare the drink fresh each day. Health experts note that these ingredients are rich in iron, calcium, and essential micronutrients, helping reduce anaemia and support children’s growth.

Minister Nara Lokesh said the programme has also enhanced students’ concentration and classroom participation, adding that the extension reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring proper nutrition for every student.
