AP Commerce Chamber Seeks IndiGo, Air India Flights Between Vijayawada and Kochi
The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) has urged IndiGo and Air India to introduce direct flights between Vijayawada and Kochi, citing the growing travel needs of Sabarimala pilgrims and passengers travelling for tourism, medical treatment and business. The federation believes improved air connectivity between the two cities would make journeys more convenient while strengthening economic ties between Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
In a statement, AP Chambers president P. Bhaskar Rao highlighted the significant demand for travel during the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage season, which runs from November to January. According to him, approximately three lakh pilgrims travel from Vijayawada to Sabarimala every year, making convenient transport options particularly important during this period.
The introduction of direct flights to Kochi would offer pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana a more accessible travel option, potentially reducing the inconvenience associated with indirect journeys. Kochi serves as an important gateway for travellers heading to Kerala, including those visiting Sabarimala for the annual pilgrimage.
AP Chambers has requested both airlines to assess passenger demand and operate a sufficient number of flights with convenient departure and arrival schedules to accommodate the seasonal rush. It stressed that services should be planned according to the expected increase in passenger traffic during the pilgrimage months.
The federation has also called on the airlines to examine the feasibility of maintaining the route throughout the year rather than limiting operations to the Sabarimala season. It pointed to the requirements of tourists, patients seeking medical care, business travellers and other passengers who could benefit from a direct connection between the two cities.
Beyond pilgrimage-related travel, AP Chambers noted that the expanding development activities in the Amaravati capital region could generate additional demand for air connectivity. Better links between Andhra Pradesh and Kerala could also facilitate business exchanges, commercial activities and closer economic cooperation between the states.
The federation has urged IndiGo and Air India to complete their feasibility assessments and prepare an action plan at the earliest, enabling the proposed services to begin with the upcoming Sabarimala season.
