AP CM Seeks Central Support Amid Spike In Shrimp Feed Prices
Andhra Pradesh is exploring policy-level interventions and federal support to stabilise the aquaculture sector after a sharp escalation in shrimp feed costs has placed significant financial strain on farmers across the state.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has taken up the issue with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, seeking urgent Central assistance to cushion aqua farmers from the impact of rising input prices. In his communication, the Chief Minister stressed the need for immediate corrective measures to prevent further losses in the sector.
At the state level, a detailed review was conducted at the Secretariat on Saturday under the chairmanship of Special Chief Secretary B. Rajasekhar . Officials examined supply-side constraints in raw materials and discussed possible policy options, including easing restrictions on soy imports and incentivising fishmeal exports to improve domestic availability.
Fisheries Commissioner Ramashankar Naik presented an extensive assessment of current conditions in the aquaculture ecosystem, highlighting cost pressures being faced by both farmers and feed manufacturers.
Data cited from CIBA scientists indicated that between January and May 2026, prices of key raw materials such as soy, fishmeal and fish oil have risen sharply. This surge has pushed up feed production costs by Rs. 31.03 per kilogram , significantly altering input economics for shrimp cultivation. Industry representatives further noted that raw material inflation of over 20 per cent has increased production costs by nearly Rs. 25,000 per tonne .
While feed manufacturers argue that price revisions are unavoidable under current conditions, farmer groups have opposed the increase, alleging coordinated pricing practices and demanding continuation of existing rates until the completion of the summer crop cycle. They have also sought subsidised electricity at Rs. 1.50 per unit for farms registered under APSADA.
In response, the state government is considering a structured pricing framework that would revise shrimp feed rates on a monthly basis, similar to poultry feed models. Authorities are also planning to introduce a system of fortnightly official procurement price announcements to improve price transparency and protect farmers from market distortions.
