Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has requested the Union government to provide legal status to Amaravati as the State capital by introducing a Bill in Parliament, saying it is vital for Andhra Pradesh’s long-term stability and development.

The Chief Minister met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday, soon after his visit to the Polavaram project. During the meeting, Naidu discussed several important issues concerning the State, with a focus on the capital city and financial challenges.

Naidu said that granting statutory recognition to Amaravati would help speed up development, meet public expectations, and rebuild investor confidence . He explained that legal clarity on the capital would encourage long-term investments and provide stability to governance.

The Chief Minister also raised concerns over the funding structure of the newly launched Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood (Grameen) scheme , known as G-RAM-G . He pointed out that the Centre’s decision to revise the funding ratio to 60:40 between the Centre and the States has increased the financial burden on Andhra Pradesh, which is already facing fiscal stress.

Naidu warned that the higher State share could affect the smooth and effective implementation of the scheme. He urged the Centre to consider financial flexibility or alternative support , keeping in mind Andhra Pradesh’s current economic condition.

While appreciating the support already extended by the Union government, the Chief Minister requested continued assistance to help the State recover financially and maintain ongoing development and welfare programmes.

The two leaders also discussed development projects, welfare schemes, and recent political and administrative developments in Andhra Pradesh. Naidu emphasised that stronger coordination between the Centre and the State would help accelerate growth.

The meeting gained importance as it was held ahead of the Union Budget 2026 , scheduled to be presented in Parliament on February 1. As a key ally of the NDA, Naidu is understood to have sought special support and adequate budgetary allocations for Andhra Pradesh.
