AP Assembly monsoon session begins with focus on welfare and urban development

The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session opened on Wednesday with ministers outlining the government’s priorities in welfare and infrastructure.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani highlighted major measures to strengthen the Anganwadi system. She said the state runs 55,746 centres staffed by over 1 lakh workers and helpers, with honorariums raised to ₹11,500 for workers and ₹7,000 for helpers and mini-workers. Benefits such as maternity leave, insurance, gratuity, uniforms, and service awards are also in place. She noted that 5,000 mini-centres have been upgraded, while drinking water, toilets, and electricity have been added to thousands of facilities.

Urban Development Minister Narayana, responding to a separate question, said nearly 8.6 lakh new household drinking water connections will be provided in municipalities over the next three years under AMRUT 2.0. He criticized the previous government for failing to release the state’s share of funds, which stalled earlier projects. The minister added that works would resume once Cabinet approval for AMRUT 2.0 is secured, and cited a ₹99.7-crore project to supply 0.18 TMC water to Mydukur municipality from the Srisailam Right Canal as an example.

With both welfare and infrastructure issues dominating Question Hour, the House set the tone for a session expected to see sharp debate on governance and delivery of services.
