Kimi Antonelli underlined his growing stature in Formula 1 by storming to pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix , setting the pace in qualifying for Round 3 of the 2026 season at the iconic Suzuka Circuit on Saturday.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver clocked a best lap of 1:28.778 , securing his second successive pole just two weeks after clinching his maiden win in China. Antonelli will start alongside teammate George Russell , who has also enjoyed a strong start to the season, having taken victory from pole in the opening race in Australia.

Sunday’s race marks Round 3 of a season already impacted by geopolitical tensions. The Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix were cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia , compressing the early calendar and placing greater emphasis on each race weekend.

Behind the Mercedes front-row lockout, McLaren ’s Oscar Piastri will start third, his first race appearance of the season after a disrupted start. The Australian missed the Chinese Grand Prix due to electrical failures that sidelined both McLaren cars and was unable to take the start in Australia following a pre-race crash.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will join Piastri on the second row, while Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton line up on the third row, setting up a competitive chase behind the leaders.

Meanwhile, reigning world champion Max Verstappen faces an uphill battle after qualifying 11th. The Red Bull Racing driver struggled with car balance throughout the session and described it over team radio as “completely undrivable.”

Qualifying unfolded under clear skies, with a similar weather forecast for race day. With Mercedes asserting early dominance and rivals grappling with reliability and performance concerns, all eyes will be on whether Antonelli can convert pole into victory in what promises to be a pivotal Round 3 showdown of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
