Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli strengthened his bid for the Formula 1 world championship with a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, taking his ninth win of the season and moving closer to a historic title.

Starting from pole position at the Circuit of the Americas, Kimi Antonelli clocked 1:35:16.650 to win the 56-lap United States Grand Prix. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second, 13.078 seconds behind, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured third place, 17.485 seconds adrift of the race winner.

The contest for the remaining podium positions produced some of the day's most exciting moments. Leclerc and Verstappen traded places during the opening lap as both drivers fought to establish themselves behind Antonelli. Verstappen initially recovered second place, but Leclerc continued to apply pressure and eventually reclaimed the position in the closing stages.

Antonelli, meanwhile, maintained his advantage despite Leclerc's pursuit. Strong pace and a carefully managed strategy allowed the Mercedes driver to stay ahead and secure another crucial victory in his championship campaign. The race also featured a late Virtual Safety Car (VSC) after Valtteri Bottas' Cadillac stopped on the circuit. The neutralisation interrupted the closing stages, but Antonelli retained his lead and completed the race without surrendering the top spot.

Mercedes teammate George Russell finished eighth, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton came fourth, leaving both unable to prevent Antonelli from strengthening his championship position.

Attention now turns to the Mexico City Grand Prix, where Antonelli could secure the title. According to the supplied report, he needs to finish ninth or higher to become Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion and Italy's first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Verstappen, a four-time world champion who won consecutive titles from 2021 to 2024, is now out of contention for the 2026 championship. After the race, Antonelli credited the team's collective effort for the result. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also praised the victory as another step towards the ultimate goal. With the championship within reach, Antonelli heads to Mexico with an opportunity to make history in his second Formula 1 season.
