Anthropic Opens First India Office in Bengaluru, Bets Big on AI Growth
Global artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has officially launched its India operations with the opening of its first office at Embassy Golf Links in Bengaluru , marking its second Asia-Pacific hub after Tokyo and signalling a strategic expansion into one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets. The move comes as India has emerged as the second-largest global market for the company’s AI assistant, Claude , reflecting rapid enterprise adoption and strong developer engagement. Former Microsoft executive Irina Ghosh will head the India division as Managing Director, overseeing enterprise partnerships, policy engagement, and local growth initiatives.
Anthropic highlighted India’s accelerating AI adoption as a key driver of its expansion. The company’s revenue run-rate in the country has doubled in recent months, while India accounts for roughly 6 percent of global Claude conversations . A significant share of usage in India involves advanced technical workflows such as application development, system modernization, and complex computational tasks, underscoring the depth of the country’s engineering talent. Executives noted that Indian developers increasingly use Claude for sophisticated coding, automation, and productivity workflows, positioning India as a high-intensity technical market .
Alongside the office launch, Anthropic announced collaborations across aviation, fintech, IT services, education, and agriculture, highlighting AI’s growing role in enterprise transformation . Air India is deploying Claude to accelerate software development and operational automation, while fintech platform CRED is using the system to roll out new features faster and improve testing efficiency. IT services giant Cognizant plans to extend Claude’s capabilities to its global workforce of approximately 350,000 employees to modernize legacy systems and support enterprise AI adoption. Startups and technology platforms are also integrating the AI assistant into risk analysis, customer insights, and decision-making tools, reflecting the rapid spread of AI-driven productivity solutions.
Beyond corporate applications, Anthropic is expanding into social impact initiatives and sectoral collaborations. The company is partnering with NGO Pratham to pilot an AI-powered “Anytime Testing Machine” across 20 schools to enhance student assessment and learning outcomes. It is also working with organizations such as Karya to address agricultural challenges and legal access issues using AI-driven solutions, aligning with its emphasis on responsible AI deployment in education and development sectors.
To improve accessibility, Claude has been trained in 10 Indian languages , including Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil, enabling broader adoption across diverse linguistic communities. AI integration is also gaining momentum in the public sector, with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation launching a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to deliver official data through AI interfaces. Meanwhile, food delivery platform Swiggy is leveraging conversational AI to enable users to order groceries and services directly through chat-based interactions.
Anthropic’s expansion comes as India positions itself at the center of the global AI race , supported by a vast developer base, growing digital infrastructure, and government initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission aimed at strengthening domestic AI capabilities. Irina Ghosh described the country as a tremendous opportunity to deliver responsible AI solutions at scale and announced plans for significant hiring across sales, policy, and engineering roles. She emphasized that India’s technical talent, digital public infrastructure, and vibrant startup ecosystem provide a strong foundation for the next phase of AI-driven innovation .
