Another Massive Blackout Rocks Cuba, Leaving the Nation Battling an Unfolding Crisis

Cuba was plunged into darkness once again on Tuesday after a nationwide power outage struck the island, marking the third countrywide blackout in just two weeks and highlighting the severity of its deepening energy crisis.

The latest collapse of the National Electric System (SEN) was triggered by a fault at a generating unit in the eastern province of Holguín , which caused a sudden change in grid frequency and led to the shutdown of the country's electricity network, according to officials.

Authorities immediately launched emergency restoration measures by creating isolated power networks, known as "micro-islands," to gradually reconnect the national grid. Electricity was first restored to critical facilities , including hospitals and food processing plants. By Tuesday afternoon, limited power had returned to parts of Havana , while provinces such as Guantánamo, Cienfuegos and Matanzas also reported partial restoration.

The latest outage comes as Cuba grapples with an acute fuel shortage that has crippled electricity generation. The island has struggled to secure fuel imports since January after renewed US sanctions and restrictions on oil supplies intensified pressure on the country's already fragile economy.

Cuba currently produces only about 40 per cent of the fuel it requires , leaving it heavily dependent on imports. The shortage has disrupted public transportation, forced authorities to postpone tens of thousands of surgeries , reduced working hours and caused flight disruptions, while also affecting access to clean water, internet and telephone services .

The repeated blackouts have become part of daily life for many Cubans. Residents say prolonged outages have forced families to adapt by using solar panels, portable batteries and electric vehicles powered by photovoltaic systems whenever possible.

Just last week, two separate nationwide blackouts left more than 9 million people without electricity. Combined with earlier outages in March, the recurring failures have underscored the mounting strain on Cuba's ageing power infrastructure and worsening economic conditions.

With fuel supplies still running critically low and no immediate solution in sight, experts warn that Cuba could continue facing widespread power disruptions in the coming weeks, prolonging hardships for millions across the island.
