Another Day, Another Hindu Brutally Killed in Bangladesh, Sixth in a Month

A 40-year-old Hindu grocery shop owner was killed by unidentified assailants in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district, marking the sixth killing of a Hindu individual in recent weeks , according to police and local media reports.

The victim, Moni Chakraborty , was attacked with a sharp, locally made weapon at Charsindhur Bazar in Palash Upazila around 11 pm on Monday while he was returning home after closing his shop. He collapsed at the spot and died of his injuries, police and local residents said.

Palash Police Station officer-in-charge Shahed Al Mamun said Moni was the son of Madan Thakur, a resident of Sadharchar Union in Shibpur Upazila, and had been running a grocery shop at the bazar for several years. An investigation is underway, and efforts are on to identify and arrest the attackers, police said.

The killing came hours after another Hindu businessman, Rana Pratap Bairagi , who was also the acting editor of a local newspaper, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Jessore district on Monday.

According to police records and media reports, Moni Chakraborty’s killing is the sixth fatal attack on Hindu individuals in the past few weeks. The other victims include Dipu Chandra Das , a Hindu garment worker who was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh district on December 18; Bajendra Biswas , a Hindu man who was shot dead in a workplace-related incident in late December ; Khokon Chandra Das , a Hindu businessman who was stabbed and set on fire in Shariatpur district on December 31 and later succumbed to his injuries; and Rana Pratap Bairagi .

The series of killings has triggered concern among minority communities, with rights groups and community leaders urging authorities to ensure swift investigations and stronger protection for vulnerable groups. Police said the motive behind the attacks is still being examined and no arrests have been made so far in the latest case.
