Another Collapse, Another Warning Ignored? 2 Dead in Delhi Building Tragedy

Another building collapse in Delhi has exposed serious questions over construction safety and civic accountability in the national capital. A three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar on Thursday morning, killing two people and injuring four others, while several more were initially feared trapped under the debris.

The building, located in Gali Sitara near Chawri Bazaar Metro station, collapsed around 9.50 am. Around 15 people were initially feared trapped. Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, MCD and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushed to the spot. The narrow lanes, reportedly just 3-4 feet wide, made it difficult to bring in heavy rescue machinery. Neighbouring buildings were also evacuated amid concerns over structural damage.

In a significant revelation, Delhi Police had reportedly alerted the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) about unauthorised construction at the property on June 15, nearly five months before the collapse. However, police officers said they were unaware of any action taken following the communication.

Preliminary findings suggest the building, standing on a plot measuring around 50 square metres, had no sanctioned building plan. A concrete slab was reportedly being cast on the third floor when the structure gave way.

The tragedy comes barely two months after a five-storey building collapsed in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan on September 6, killing seven people.

Despite safety inspections and action against hundreds of properties following that incident, another collapse has raised questions about enforcement on the ground. For Delhi’s residents, building collapses are increasingly becoming a frighteningly familiar occurrence rather than an exceptional tragedy. Official inspections and demolition drives mean little if unsafe construction continues unchecked.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered an inquiry and an FIR against the contractor. The MCD suspended an Assistant Engineer and a Junior Engineer over alleged negligence.
