Another act of provocation? Suspected Pakistani drones spotted along LoC

Several suspected drones from Pakistan were sighted along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Naushera-Rajouri sector late on Sunday, prompting swift action by the Indian Army , defence sources said. The Naushera-Rajouri sector is in Jammu and Kashmir, roughly 140 km southwest of Srinagar, near the border with Pakistan.

Local residents reported seeing the Army’s countermeasures in action, with extensive firing in Jangarh and Kalal villages around 7:28 pm. One resident told, “At around 7:28 pm yesterday, there was a movement of drones at the border. Our Indian Army forces retaliated against it. The drones crossed from here. There was extensive firing in the areas of Jangarh and Kalal. Our armed forces were absolutely alert. We thank our army that because of them, we are sitting here peacefully.”

The Indian Army confirmed that the drones were detected along the LoC and that troops undertook counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) measures , successfully forcing the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAVs) to retreat. Defence sources emphasized that the drones did not enter further into Indian territory and no payload, weapons, or explosives were recovered from the sightings. While the sightings were confirmed, official radar or visual proof has not been released, and the exact number of drones remains unverified.

The latest incident follows a recent arms consignment recovery in Samba district , just two days prior. On Friday night (January 10, 2026), the Border Security Force (BSF) and Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered weapons from Paloora village near the International Border , including a Chinese 9mm pistol with two magazines, a Glock 9mm pistol with one magazine, a Chinese grenade marked SPL HGR 84, and 16 live rounds. Officials said the consignment was believed to have been dropped by a drone from across the border , likely intended for internal terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir , highlighting a continuing pattern of cross-border drone activity to transport arms.

Following Sunday’s drone sightings, ground search operations were conducted in the forward areas of Rajouri, Samba, and Poonch to ensure there were no dropped contraband or weapons. Defence officials emphasized the importance of constant vigilance along sensitive LoC sectors, noting that low-altitude drone incursions pose a strategic challenge to border security.

However the repeated drone sightings, combined with the recent arms drop in Samba, could be seen as a deliberate provocation by Pakistan, likely intended to test Indian forces, challenge border vigilance, and send a strategic signal without triggering a direct confrontation. Security experts say this is not new, Pakistan has often resorted to such “cheap tricks” along the LoC, continuing a long pattern of provocations. The swift Indian Army response ensured that the drones were repelled, but the incidents underscore the ongoing security challenges and heightened tensions along the LoC.
