Annapurna reinvented, Rs 5 meals at Indiramma canteens now in Hyd

Hyderabad’s citizens can now enjoy affordable, nutritious meals with the inauguration of modernised Indiramma Canteens, offering breakfast at just Rs 5. The canteens were officially opened on Monday by Transport and Hyderabad District in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi.

The initiative, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s vision, aims to make quality meals accessible to underprivileged citizens while reducing their economic burden. “Indiramma Canteens have been launched to ensure affordable meals for all. From today, breakfast at Rs 5 will also be available,” said Minister Prabhakar. He added that although the government bears a significant financial cost, it is committed to providing quality food at nominal prices.

Each breakfast and meal at these canteens costs Rs 5. With the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) subsidising Rs 14 per breakfast and Rs 24.83 per meal, beneficiaries can save up to Rs 3,000 every month.

The GHMC highlighted on its official social media handle ‘X’ that the initiative, in collaboration with the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation, serves nutritious breakfasts and hot afternoon meals to daily wage earners, students, drivers, migrant workers, and other underprivileged citizens. “These canteens offer dignity and relief to people who rely on affordable food every day,” the post said.

Earlier known as Annapurna Rs 5 Meal Centres, these canteens have now been renamed Indiramma Canteens. Currently, 150 centres operate across the city, serving over 30,000 beneficiaries daily. Since the programme’s inception, more than 12.3 crore meals have been provided, with GHMC spending nearly Rs 254 crore to ensure that affordable food reaches those who need it most.

This step reinforces Hyderabad’s commitment to social welfare and ensures that every citizen has access to healthy, budget-friendly meals.
