Annamalai Quits BJP, to Launch New Party for Tamil Nadu Polls

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai formally parted ways with the Bharatiya Janata Party , ending a six year association and setting the stage for a new political chapter in the state. BJP National President Nitin Nabin accepted Annamalai's resignation from the party's primary membership, with a formal statement issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh confirming the development.

Hours after the BJP accepted his resignation, Annamalai announced that he would launch a new political movement that would eventually evolve into a political party to contest the next Tamil Nadu Assembly election . Addressing the public via a social media video, he said he had quit the BJP in a dignified manner to usher in a new kind of politics, adding that the goals ahead were bigger and required more people to be taken along.

Annamalai named his new people's movement “We The Leaders” , echoing the name of the non profit organisation he founded in 2020, and outlined grassroots plans focused on cadre building and empowering ordinary citizens to take up leadership roles. He described his vision as one aimed at removing “cult politics” and offering an alternative governance model in the state.

In his resignation letter submitted to BJP president Nitin Nabin on June 2 , formally accepted by the party on Friday, Annamalai praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's leadership but said his vision for Tamil Nadu had increasingly diverged from that of the BJP's central leadership. He also noted that national parties had often failed to connect with the people of Tamil Nadu in a way that resonated locally. He said he had informed the party of his intention to resign as early as December 4, 2025, but was asked to continue until the elections were completed.

The poor performance of the NDA in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is said to have reinforced his belief that the BJP's current strategy in the state was not strengthening its position. He had opposed the alliance with the AIADMK and argued that the BJP should instead build independent organisational strength and contest more seats under its own symbol.

Responding to the development, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran said Annamalai's exit would not be a setback for the party and that the BJP would remain firm on its ideology. He also said that in a democracy, everyone is free to start a political party.

MDMK leader Durai Vaiko welcomed Annamalai's decision, wishing him success and expressing hope that he would follow Dravidian ideology in his new political journey.

Annamalai entered politics in August 2020 after resigning from the Indian Police Service and quickly became one of the BJP's most recognisable faces in South India before being appointed Tamil Nadu BJP president in July 2021. His departure raises fresh questions about the saffron party's prospects in a state long dominated by Dravidian parties.
