India’s middle and long-distance runner Ankita Dhyani delivered a sensational performance in the United States, clocking a personal best of 4:06.75 in the women’s 1500m at the Stumptown Twilight meet.

The 24-year-old finished second in the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger event on Saturday, missing out on the top spot by just 0.35 seconds. Ecuador’s Carmen Alder Caisalitin won the race in 4:06.40, while American Eleanor Fulton finished third in 4:09.36.

For Dhyani, however, the result was about more than a podium finish. Her 4:06.75 mark shaved more than five seconds off her previous personal best of 4:12.28, signalling a major step forward in her 1500m career.

The performance is also the fastest 1500m time by an Indian this season, the third-fastest recorded by an Asian athlete so far and the fourth-fastest time ever by an Indian in the event.

Dhyani is now within striking distance of the national record of 4:04.78, set by KM Deeksha.

The latest performance adds to an already impressive international résumé. Dhyani won bronze in the 5000m at the 2023 Asian Championships and silver in the 3000m at the 2024 Asian Indoor Championships. She also competed in the 5000m at the 2022 Asian Games and the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Her recent form has been equally encouraging. At the National Inter-State Championships in June, Dhyani finished second to Parul Chaudhary in the 1500m before winning the 3000m steeplechase in 9:44.05.

That steeplechase time is already faster than the 9:47.53 qualification mark set by the Athletics Federation of India for the 2026 Asian Games, underlining her growing credentials across multiple middle- and long-distance events.

With her latest breakthrough in the 1500m, Dhyani has put herself firmly among India’s leading runners and within sight of another major national milestone.
