Angel Chakma murder: Dehradun police say ‘no racial’ angle, cite group clash

Uttarakhand police have clarified that their ongoing investigation into the death of Angel Chakma , a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, has so far found no evidence of racial slurs or a racial motive behind the attack. The authorities emphasized that the clash appears to have escalated from a misunderstanding during a social interaction, contradicting earlier reports and family claims that the assault was racially motivated.

Angel was critically injured on December 9 during a confrontation at a birthday gathering in Dehradun’s Selaqui area and succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after 17 days in hospital. The altercation involved Angel, his younger brother Michael, and a group of acquaintances. Michael survived with head injuries, but Angel suffered fatal stab wounds to his neck and spine.

Police have arrested five of the six accused , including three adults now in judicial custody and two juveniles sent to correctional homes. One suspect, a Nepali national, remains absconding, and authorities have announced a reward for information leading to his arrest. The FIR has been expanded to include charges ranging from voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons to murder, while investigators continue to examine CCTV footage, witness statements, and all available evidence.

Despite police findings, Angel’s family insists the attack was racially driven , citing alleged taunts like “Chinese momo” as the trigger. They are demanding strict punishment for those responsible. The case has drawn nationwide attention, with protests and candlelight marches organized by student groups and communities from the Northeast, emphasizing concerns over student safety.

Political reactions have been polarized. Leaders like Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav have labeled the killing a “despicable hate crime,” while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted systemic prejudice against Northeast communities. Meanwhile, state officials maintain that the investigation must conclude before any racial motive is confirmed.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured Angel’s family of strict action, and the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to ensure the protection of students from the Northeast. The case continues to spotlight the safety of minority students studying outside their home regions and the broader need to address discrimination and racial abuse.
