Andhra’s pride as Shree Charani shines in India’s World Cup triumph
Andhra Pradesh’s Sports, Transport, and Youth Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy has hailed India’s women’s cricket team for winning the 2025 ICC Women’s One-Day World Cup, describing it as “a proud moment that has elevated the nation’s sporting prestige.”
In his statement issued on Monday, the Minister said that India’s maiden Women’s ODI World Cup victory would remain “a historic milestone in the country’s sporting history.” He extended congratulations to all members of the women’s team, stating that the “collective performance and unity displayed in the final match against South Africa stand as an inspiration to every young athlete in the country.”
Reddy expressed gratitude to the coaching and support staff of the team, noting that such victories are the result of dedication, discipline, and teamwork. “The remarkable triumph achieved by the women’s team reflects the growing strength of Indian sports and the rising participation of women in competitive arenas,” he said.
He further remarked that the increasing success of women in sports represents a positive sign for the nation’s progress, adding that the victory would inspire a new generation of youth, particularly young women athletes, across India.
Historic Win Sparks Statewide Celebrations
The Indian women’s team’s thrilling win against South Africa in the World Cup final was celebrated across Andhra Pradesh. Messages of appreciation were shared by sports associations, schools, and youth organizations throughout the state. The victory was viewed as a landmark achievement that would motivate local athletes to aim higher in national and international competitions.
Special attention was drawn to Andhra’s own contribution to the team — N. Shree Charani, the 20-year-old left-arm spinner from Erramalle village in Kadapa district, who was part of India’s victorious squad. Charani, who finished the tournament as India’s second-highest wicket-taker, became the first woman cricketer from YSR Kadapa district to represent India, marking a new chapter for Rayalaseema’s sporting identity.
Her selection followed an impressive stint in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where she represented Delhi Capitals Women, taking four wickets in two appearances. Earlier in March 2025, she had registered her maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket while playing for Andhra in the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy.
Her inclusion in the national team and contribution to India’s World Cup success were widely celebrated in her hometown. Residents of Erramalle village expressed pride, calling her “a symbol of inspiration for girls from rural regions.”
Andhra’s Growing Footprint in Indian Cricket
Andhra Pradesh has seen a growing presence in Indian cricket in recent years, with both men and women players performing consistently at domestic and international levels.
Senior cricketers Hanuma Vihari and K. S. Bharat have continued to represent the state prominently. Vihari, from Kakinada, captains the Andhra Ranji team and mentors emerging players through his cricket academy. Bharat, from Visakhapatnam, remains part of India’s Test squad and played in the 2025 IPL season for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Ricky Bhui, another key domestic player, recently scored a century in the Ranji Trophy against Kerala, while young talent Shaik Rasheed from Guntur — vice-captain of India’s 2022 Under-19 World Cup-winning team — is being groomed through the BCCI’s Emerging Players programme and continues to play for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
On the women’s front, Sabbhineni Meghana from Krishna district has cemented her position in the Indian side as a top-order batter. She was among the standout performers in the World Cup final and continues to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the WPL. Another promising player, M. Anusha from Visakhapatnam, has represented India A and is part of the national development camp.
Minister’s Focus on Sports Development
Since assuming office earlier this year, Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy has emphasized the expansion of sports infrastructure and youth programs across Andhra Pradesh. His department has initiated measures to strengthen district-level sports academies, improve stadium facilities, and provide financial support to talented athletes through the Andhra Pradesh Sports Authority.
Discussions have been held to upgrade existing infrastructure in Kadapa, Visakhapatnam, and Mangalagiri, and a draft proposal for a statewide youth and sports development policy is under consideration. The Minister has also encouraged private sector participation in nurturing emerging athletes and integrating sports with educational institutions to ensure broader participation.
In his message following India’s World Cup victory, Reddy stated that the state government would continue to prioritize sports as a key component of youth empowerment. He added that “every achievement on the international stage reflects the nation’s potential and the role of young Indians in shaping its global image.”
A Broader Vision for Andhra’s Sports Future
Observers have noted that Andhra Pradesh’s cricketing landscape has become more inclusive, with players now emerging from both coastal and Rayalaseema regions. The success of cricketers such as Shree Charani and Meghana has underscored the importance of rural talent pipelines and the need for continued investment in grassroots sports.
With two women and two men from Andhra currently active in the national squads, the state’s contribution to Indian cricket has become more balanced than ever before. The Minister’s message of encouragement, coupled with the state’s ongoing investment in sports development, is being viewed as a sign of Andhra’s commitment to nurturing future champions.
As India celebrates its first Women’s ODI World Cup triumph, the pride felt in Andhra Pradesh runs deep — not only for the nation’s historic victory but also for the homegrown athletes and administrators whose efforts have brought the state closer to the heart of Indian cricket.
