Andhra to set up world-class central library within two years

In a landmark announcement, the Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled plans to establish a world-class central library within the next 24 months. Minister Nara Lokesh stated that the upcoming facility will serve as a model for the entire country, setting new benchmarks in knowledge access, research infrastructure, and public learning spaces.

The proposed library is expected to feature advanced digital resources, state-of-the-art reading halls, research support services, and inclusive facilities catering to students, scholars, and the general public alike. Authorities have emphasized that the project will not merely be a repository of books but a dynamic hub of learning, innovation, and cultural exchange.

Expand district libraries in line with new districts

Andhra Pradesh government is set to expand its public library network by establishing 26 district libraries across the state, in line with the reorganization of districts. At present, only 13 district libraries are functioning, but the new plan aims to ensure that every district has its own central facility.

The minister confirmed that the proposal has already been prepared and is currently under consideration by the Finance Department. Once approved, the initiative will significantly strengthen access to knowledge resources, especially in newly created districts, and support the government’s broader vision of promoting education and digital literacy.

Based on the most recent official data available from the Andhra Pradesh Library Department (2024), the state has a three-tier public library system:

• 1 State Central Library (Vijayawada)

• 13 District Libraries (one in each pre-reorganization district)

• 970 Branch Libraries (town/municipality level)

• 5,000 Village Libraries (gram panchayat level)

Total Libraries in Andhra Pradesh (as of 2024): about 6,000+ libraries (covering state, district, town, and village levels)
