Andhra Pradesh is witnessing an intense and prolonged spell of summer heat, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels across several regions. Weather authorities have issued a severe heatwave alert for the next three days, warning that daytime conditions are likely to remain hazardous, particularly during peak afternoon hours.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has advised people to avoid outdoor exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when heat intensity is expected to be at its highest. Officials have also cautioned that prolonged exposure during this period could lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related health complications.

Several parts of the state have already reported record-breaking temperatures for the season , with some locations touching unusually high levels. In the East Godavari region, Chityala recorded an alarming 48.3°C, one of the highest readings in recent years. Similar extreme temperatures were observed in Tanuku in West Godavari and Piduguralla in Palnadu district, both registering around 48.1°C, underscoring the severity of the ongoing heatwave.

Other regions have also been severely affected, with Mylavaram in NTR district recording 45.7°C, Visakhapatnam’s rural areas 45.6°C, Kanigiri in Prakasam district 45.5°C, Kommapadu in the Nellore region 45.2°C, and Nandanamarelli around 44.6°C. According to officials, as many as 13 districts have already crossed the 45°C mark, while heatwave-like conditions have been reported in over 170 mandals across the state.

APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain stated that the state is experiencing unusually high thermal stress, with the situation expected to persist for the next few days. He noted that nearly 29 mandals are currently under severe heatwave conditions, while over 160 mandals are experiencing heatwave-like temperatures. The intensity is projected to increase further, with forecasts suggesting that around 50 mandals could face severe heatwave conditions and more than 200 mandals may remain affected in the coming days.

Meteorological outlooks indicate that coastal and delta districts including East Godavari, West Godavari, Konaseema, Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla and Prakasam are likely to continue recording temperatures between 45°C and 47°C. Inland and Rayalaseema districts such as Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Kadapa and Chittoor are also expected to remain in the 40°C to 43°C range, while northern coastal districts like Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam may see slightly lower but still high temperatures between 40°C and 43°C.

Despite the intense heat, meteorologists have indicated the possibility of partial relief in some areas due to an upper-air trough extending from Odisha towards North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. This system may trigger isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rainfall in select districts. Areas such as Prakasam, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur and Chittoor, along with parts of the ASR region and scattered coastal pockets, are expected to receive occasional showers.

Authorities have urged caution during thunderstorm activity, advising people not to take shelter under trees, electric poles, or unstable structures during lightning events. Health officials have also stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable groups, including elderly citizens, pregnant women, infants, and individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart conditions.

With extreme heat persisting alongside the possibility of isolated rainfall, Andhra Pradesh is expected to experience highly unstable weather conditions over the coming days, demanding continued vigilance and precaution from the public.
