Andhra Pradesh Sets National Benchmark in Tackling Twin Cyclones
Andhra Pradesh has demonstrated effective disaster management by successfully handling two severe cyclones, Arnab and Murasu, which struck the state within a week, bringing winds exceeding 120 kmph and affecting 20 districts. Through advance planning, modern technology and coordination among government departments, the state managed to minimise loss of life and property.
The government attributed the successful response to the Chief Minister's administrative experience, technological knowledge and advance strategies. Ministers monitored the situation department-wise, while special chief secretaries and IAS officers coordinated preparedness plans. Thousands of government employees worked on the ground to ensure timely rescue and relief operations.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) and Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) played a crucial role in managing the crisis. Both organisations operated round-the-clock control rooms to monitor cyclone intensity, movement and probable landfall locations. Artificial intelligence and satellite data were used to assess potential risks, while timely alerts were sent to mobile phones in vulnerable districts to keep residents and field-level officials prepared.
Coordination among the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, electricity, revenue and other departments helped speed up emergency operations. Following the cyclones, teams removed fallen trees and electricity poles from roads and restored transport connectivity in record time, allowing normal life to resume quickly.
The government also used the Manamitra WhatsApp application and APSDMA toll-free helplines to receive public complaints and requests for assistance. Officials responded promptly and arranged solutions to problems reported by affected residents.
As a precautionary measure, lakhs of people were shifted to safer rehabilitation centres with the support of NDRF, SDRF, police, fire and revenue personnel. Food, drinking water and medical facilities were provided continuously at these centres.
The government said its preparedness, technology-driven monitoring and coordinated response helped tackle both cyclones effectively. It also stated that a Central team that visited to assess Cyclone Arnab's impact appreciated the state's disaster management efforts, describing Andhra Pradesh as a model for the country.
