Andhra Pradesh Assembly Unanimously Backs Amaravati as Permanent Capital
The Andhra Pradesh government has taken a significant step to establish Amaravati as the state’s permanent capital. On Saturday, the State Assembly unanimously passed a resolution calling for the greenfield city to be formally recognized as the official capital.
The resolution proposes amending Section 5(2) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 , to remove uncertainty about the capital’s location after Hyderabad ’s tenure as the joint capital ended. The amendment explicitly mentions “in Amaravati” and requests that the Union Government clarify that the capital lies within the jurisdiction of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) .
Speaking in the Assembly, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu declared, “Amaravati is Andhra Pradesh’s only capital. It is not merely a city, it represents the pride and identity of five crore Andhras. No one can alter its status. Giving it legal recognition through Parliament is our right.” He added that the move will restore investor confidence and address the confusion caused by previous administrations.
The Assembly’s decision is expected to give a major boost to infrastructure development in Amaravati. With the amendment likely to be passed in the next parliamentary session, securing international funding for capital projects could become easier. Analysts note that this legal backing will act as a protective shield for ongoing construction and large-scale development projects. The government is preparing to submit the resolution to the Union Cabinet for approval in the near future.
