Andhra Pradesh: 21 districts declared illegal liquor free

Andhra Pradesh is intensifying efforts to curb the production and distribution of fake liquor across the state, said Kollu Ravindra, Minister for Excise and Mines, during a press conference held at the Secretariat on Thursday.

The minister highlighted that the Enforcement Division of the Excise Department is working efficiently to prevent illegal liquor circulation. Under the “Navodayam” initiative, 21 districts have already been declared “illegal alcohol-free zones”. Minister Ravindra emphasized that stringent action is being taken against illicit liquor, following explicit directives from the Chief Minister, and no compromises will be tolerated.

Ravindra noted that the Enforcement Division’s operations have been significantly strengthened since the new government assumed office, resulting in improved functioning at state border checkpoints. Additionally, laboratories have been set up in five regions to conduct thorough inspections, ensuring the supply of quality alcohol to the public. The minister stated that the government is serious about curbing fake liquor, contrasting it with the previous administration, which he said had been largely negligent on this issue.

To ensure public access to safe and quality liquor, the government has introduced new licensed brands. Ravindra criticized the opposition for attempting to politicize the fake liquor issue, claiming that deliberate misinformation campaigns were being spread to instill fear among the public. He alleged that former leaders were using media outlets to propagate false claims linking deaths to fake liquor, and stressed that investigations will verify the facts.

The minister also warned that individuals attempting to mislead the public through false news, social media posts, or print and electronic media reports would face legal action under Sections 353 and 356 of the Indian Penal Code, particularly when such actions undermine the government’s reputation. The minister assured that cases from the 2019–2024 period concerning fake liquor are also being thoroughly investigated and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.

Regarding the Mulakal Cheruvu fake liquor case in Annamayya district, Minister Ravindra detailed that the Assistant Commissioner of Enforcement had seized 30 cans of fake liquor, several cartons, counterfeit labels, and cap sealing devices. Investigations revealed the involvement of individuals from Tenali and Ibrahimpatnam, including Kodali Srinivas, Jayachandra Reddy, and Janardhan’s shops, and law enforcement also detained Addepalli Jagan Mohan Ravu. Actions were taken against TDP leader Jayachandra Reddy, whose bar in Ibrahimpatnam was linked to the case, and a negligent Excise SI has been suspended.

The minister reaffirmed that all individuals found responsible in these cases would face legal consequences. He also pointed out that Kodali Srinivas from Tenali, despite being involved in the fake liquor case, has not yet faced any action from the YSRCP government, highlighting the need for accountability.
