Andhra Govt Failed to Honour Key Women Welfare Assurances: YS Jagan
YSR Congress Party president and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has launched a sharp attack on the ruling coalition government in Andhra Pradesh, accusing it of failing to implement key welfare promises made to women before the elections.
In a statement issued by the YSRCP central office, Jagan alleged that the government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been making strong claims about women’s empowerment on public platforms but has not translated those assurances into action. According to him, several flagship commitments announced during the election campaign remain unfulfilled.
The former Chief Minister questioned the status of the “Adabidda Nidhi” scheme promised by the TDP-led NDA alliance during the elections. The scheme had assured a monthly assistance of ₹1,500 to every woman aged between 19 and 59 years in the state.
Jagan pointed out that nearly 1.8 crore women fall within this age group in Andhra Pradesh. If implemented as promised, each eligible woman would receive ₹18,000 annually , he said. Over a period of three years, this would amount to ₹54,000 per beneficiary . He demanded that the government clarify when these payments would begin and address the delay in implementing the scheme.
He also criticised the slow progress of another key promise the supply of three free LPG cylinders every year to each household under the Deepam–2 programme . Jagan argued that the scheme requires an estimated ₹4,000 crore annually for effective implementation. However, he alleged that the government allocated only ₹786 crore in the first year , which he described as insufficient.
For the 2026–27 financial year , the government has reportedly earmarked ₹2,601 crore for the scheme. Jagan said this allocation still falls short of what is required and reflects the government’s failure to prioritise women’s welfare.
Referring to official figures, he said the state has around 1.59 crore active LPG connections , and based on these numbers, the government owes women nearly ₹6,143 crore in benefits linked to the free cylinder promise.
Jagan further alleged that several assurances listed in the coalition’s election manifesto have been ignored. He said the wide gap between the promises made during the campaign and the allocations reflected in the state budget highlights the government’s inability to fulfil its commitments.
Expressing concern over the situation, he said women in the state are facing uncertainty as key welfare schemes promised to them have yet to be implemented.
The ruling coalition government has not issued any official response so far to the allegations made by the YSRCP leader.
