Andaman Bets on Record-Breaking Dive Events to Boost Eco-Tourism
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are gearing up for a high-impact global showcase this weekend, as the administration prepares to attempt two ambitious Guinness World Records , using the moment to spotlight the region’s rising stature as a premier scuba diving and eco-tourism destination .
The events, scheduled for May 2 and May 3 at Swaraj Dweep, are designed to blend spectacle with strategy. The first attempt, “Largest Flag Unfurled Underwater,” will see a massive 60m x 40m Indian tricolour displayed beneath the sea near Radha Nagar Beach. The second, “Tallest Human Stack Underwater,” aims to build a 10-metre vertical formation of divers near the island’s lighthouse jetty an exercise demanding precision, coordination, and strict adherence to safety norms.
Lieutenant Governor D. K. Joshi is set to participate in both events, underscoring the administration’s hands-on push to promote the islands globally. Officials say the initiative involves trained divers, technical experts, and multi-agency coordination , ensuring compliance with international safety standards and Guinness guidelines.
Beyond the record attempts, the exercise reflects a broader vision to position Andaman as a world-class marine tourism hub . The islands offer exceptional underwater visibility of up to 30–40 metres , alongside rich coral ecosystems and diverse marine life , including reef sharks, turtles, and manta rays. Popular dive locations across Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep cater to both beginners and seasoned divers.
A standout attraction remains Barren Island, home to India’s only active volcano , where divers encounter rare underwater volcanic terrain an experience that sets the islands apart from many global dive destinations. Experts believe the region’s relatively untouched reefs provide a competitive edge in an increasingly crowded international market.
Tourism continues to be a critical economic driver , with lakhs of visitors arriving annually. Backed by nearly 86% forest cover and protected ecosystems , the islands are being developed as a high-value, low-impact eco-tourism destination , aligned with global demand for sustainable travel.
Officials expect the record attempts to generate international visibility , attracting divers, adventure enthusiasts, and eco-conscious travellers . However, they also acknowledge the need to balance growth with conservation, as fragile coral ecosystems and climate pressures pose long-term challenges.
As the countdown begins, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are not just aiming to break records, but to firmly place themselves on the global map of marine adventure and sustainable tourism .
