Ancient Water And Life Building Molecules? New Jersey Meteorite That Hit Home Reveals Cosmic Secrets

Scientists have uncovered evidence of ancient extraterrestrial water and organic chemistry inside a meteorite that smashed through the roof of a home in Hillsborough, New Jersey , offering new clues into how life bearing molecules may have formed in the early solar system. The findings were published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances by an international team led by meteor astronomer Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute and NASA's Ames Research Center .

The meteorite traces back to July 16, 2024, when a daytime fireball roughly the size of a heavy airline bag entered the atmosphere at 32,000 miles per hour, producing a sonic boom heard across New York City and New Jersey as it passed just south of the Statue of Liberty . Cameras in Northford, Connecticut, and Douglassville, Pennsylvania, along with a doorbell camera in Wayne, New Jersey, captured the fireball, allowing American Meteor Society operations manager Mike Hankey to trace its trajectory back to the asteroid belt. The fragile rock broke apart around 22 miles above ground, and a Doppler radar at Newark Liberty International Airport briefly tracked falling fragments stretching from Staten Island into New Jersey. Only one piece, weighing more than two pounds, was recovered after it punched through the ceiling of a Hillsborough home's master bedroom.

The homeowner described hearing a loud crash, discovering a hole in the ceiling and a sulphur like odour, and quickly collecting the black fragments using disposable gloves, aluminium foil and sterile glass jars before patching the roof ahead of rainfall that evening, preserving what researchers call one of the most pristine meteorites of its kind.

Classified as a rare CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite , only the second such specimen ever observed falling to Earth, the sample is estimated to date back roughly 4.6 billion years to the solar system's formation and contains 1.8 percent carbon and 0.07 percent nitrogen by weight. It holds a wide range of soluble organic compounds , including numerous amino acids , along with magnesium bearing organometallic compounds similar to those found in blood and photosynthesis. Researchers also found salt rich fragments indicating briny fluids once evaporated near the asteroid's surface, a process previously confirmed only in samples from Ryugu and Bennu , but never before in a CM type meteorite. Scientists say the parent asteroid group broke apart roughly six million years ago, with a further fragment splitting off around 200,000 years ago before reaching Earth.

Fragments of the meteorite will be curated at the American Museum of Natural History , where curator Denton Ebel said the sample effectively arrived as a precious asteroid delivery on New Jersey's doorstep.
