An Auto-Drive for the Ambassador from America: Sergio Gor on a Charm Offensive
It was diplomacy with a distinctly Bengaluru flavour as US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor chose an autorickshaw over official convoys during his visit to Bengaluru , turning a simple ride into a moment of warm public diplomacy. The ambassador met BJP MP Tejasvi Surya , with discussions focusing on the expanding India–US partnership in trade, technology and innovation , following the recently concluded interim trade agreement between the two countries.
The interaction took place over breakfast at Filter Coffee, Indiranagar , where masala dosa and strong filter coffee set the tone for an informal yet substantive conversation. From there, Surya introduced the envoy to a slice of everyday city life with a ride in a traditional “Namma Auto” , an experience the ambassador described as memorable.
Surya later said Bengaluru represents a journey “from masala dosa to machine learning ,” blending tradition with cutting-edge innovation while strengthening people-to-people ties between the two democracies. Highlighting the city’s economic importance, he noted that Bengaluru hosts over 700 American companies , accounts for 43% of India’s software exports , and is home to nearly 40% of India’s Global Capability Centres (GCCs) .
Gor’s Bengaluru stop is part of a broader multi-city India outreach , which includes meetings with political leaders, defence officials and technology stakeholders. The agenda spans Indo-Pacific security , defence cooperation , and partnerships in artificial intelligence and semiconductors . During his visit, the ambassador also met Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to explore collaboration in emerging technology sectors.
In a city known for both startups and street life, an American ambassador choosing an autorickshaw conveyed a simple message that modern diplomacy can be effective, relatable, and rooted in everyday experiences.
