Consumers will have to spend more on Amul ghee and butter ahead of Diwali after the dairy major increased prices of select products. The revision comes amid rising demand for branded ghee and reported supply shortages in several markets, adding to festive-season expenses.

According to the revised maximum retail prices (MRP), a 1-kg carton of Amul ghee now costs Rs 680, up from Rs 630. The 500-gram pouch of pure ghee has become costlier by Rs 20, with its price increasing from Rs 325 to Rs 345.

Amul cow ghee has also seen a price increase. Its 500-ml pouch now costs Rs 370, compared with Rs 350 earlier, while the 1-litre pouch is priced at Rs 735, up from Rs 695.

Butter prices have also increased. The 100-gram Amul Table Butter pack now costs Rs 66, against Rs 63 earlier. The 500-gram pack is priced at Rs 325, compared with Rs 310 previously.

The price hike comes amid reports of shortages of Amul cow ghee, particularly in Gujarat. Retailers in Ahmedabad and Vadodara have reported declining stocks since the Ganesh festival. Supply concerns have also been reported in Pune, Kolkata and Jammu and Kashmir. A D-Mart outlet in Ahmedabad's Satellite area reportedly ran out of Amul ghee and butter.

One factor driving demand is the crackdown on adulterated ghee in Gujarat and Rajasthan. A cooperative leader associated with Amul said nearly 2 lakh kg of counterfeit ghee had been seized across the two states over the past six months, prompting consumers to turn towards established brands.

The festive season is adding to the pressure, with nearly 45 per cent of annual ghee consumption typically taking place during this period.

The latest increase also partly offsets the relief consumers received after the September 2025 GST reduction, when tax on dairy products was cut from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. Amul had subsequently reduced prices across more than 700 products.

Amul has attributed the latest revision to higher milk production costs. The company is a cooperative owned by 36 lakh farmers.
