India’s leading dairy brands, Amul and Mother Dairy , have increased milk prices by ₹2 per litre across major markets, adding to inflation concerns and raising the cost of daily essentials for millions of households. The revision, effective from May 14, is the second major hike by both companies in just over a year and is expected to trigger similar increases by regional dairy players.

The move comes at a time when food inflation has crossed 4 per cent , driven by rising fuel prices, supply-chain disruptions and higher costs of essential commodities. Economists say milk, a staple consumed across the country, has a direct impact on household spending as well as prices of tea, sweets, curd and processed food products.

In a statement, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) , which markets products under the Amul brand, said the increase was necessary because of higher operational and production expenses. The cooperative cited a sharp rise in cattle feed, fuel and packaging costs over the past year.

GCMMF also noted that procurement prices paid to dairy farmers had been increased by ₹30 per kilogram of fat, a 3.7 per cent rise over May 2025. The federation said nearly 80 per cent of its sales realisation is passed on to milk producers, underlining the cooperative model’s role in supporting rural incomes.

Mother Dairy announced a similar ₹2 per litre increase, saying farmer procurement prices had risen nearly 6 per cent over the last year. The company described the revision as a partial transfer of higher costs while attempting to maintain a “fair balance” between farmers and consumers.

Under the revised prices, a 500 ml pack of Amul Taaza will now cost ₹30, while Amul Gold has increased to ₹36 in Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh. Buffalo milk prices have risen sharply to ₹80 per litre. Mother Dairy’s toned milk now costs ₹60 per litre, while full cream milk has been priced at ₹72.

India remains the world’s largest milk producer, with Amul linked to nearly 3.6 million farmers . Industry analysts believe the latest revision could further push up food inflation and increase costs across the hospitality and food processing sectors.
