Amitav Kumar Gupta Takes Charge As Jharkhand Lokayukta, Reviving Anti-Corruption Watchdog
Retired judge Amitav Kumar Gupta has taken charge as the Lokayukta of Jharkhand, bringing decades of judicial experience to one of the state’s most important anti-corruption institutions.
Born on May 31, 1959, Gupta studied law at the Campus Law Centre of the University of Delhi and went on to build a steady career in the judiciary. He joined the Bihar Superior Judicial Service in 1997 as an Additional District Judge and later rose through the ranks. In 2013, he was appointed as a judge of the Jharkhand High Court, where he served until his retirement in May 2021. Over the years, he handled a wide range of civil and criminal cases, gaining extensive experience in judicial administration and legal interpretation.
As Lokayukta, Gupta now heads an independent statutory body responsible for tackling corruption and maladministration in the state. The Lokayukta functions as an ombudsman, receiving complaints from the public against government officials, ministers, and other public servants. It has the authority to conduct inquiries, order investigations, and recommend action, including disciplinary measures or prosecution, based on its findings.
The institution plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. By probing allegations of misuse of power, bribery, or irregularities in public office, the Lokayukta acts as a watchdog over the functioning of the government. Although it does not directly punish offenders, its recommendations carry significant weight and can lead to legal or administrative action.
Gupta’s appointment comes after the post remained vacant for a considerable period, during which the Jharkhand High Court had directed the state government to expedite the selection process. His experience across different levels of the judiciary is expected to strengthen the institution’s functioning and restore public confidence in anti-corruption mechanisms in Jharkhand.
