Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Wednesday reviewed the functioning of the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930 and directed officials to modernise the system using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and introduce multilingual support to improve accessibility and response efficiency.

During the review, Shah emphasised the need to ensure that every complaint received through the helpline is taken to its logical conclusion , and instructed agencies to strengthen coordination with states for faster resolution of cybercrime cases. He also asked officials to address concerns related to freezing of bank accounts , which often arise during fraud investigations.

The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) , operated under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), was launched on August 30, 2019, to strengthen reporting and response mechanisms for cybercrime incidents across the country. The portal was dedicated to the nation by the Home Minister on January 20, 2020.

According to official data, the earlier version of the cybercrime reporting system had a limited scope and primarily handled complaints related to child sexual abuse material and rape-related content . It was later expanded into a comprehensive national platform , enabling citizens to report all categories of cybercrime.

To tackle rising digital financial frauds, authorities have developed an integrated ecosystem involving law enforcement agencies, banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), financial intermediaries, payment wallets, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Reserve Bank of India and National Payments Corporation of India are key stakeholders in this coordination framework.

The Citizen Financial Cyber Frauds Reporting and Management System has also been established to enable rapid reporting of frauds involving digital banking, cards, UPI, and other payment systems. Complaints can be lodged via the 1930 helpline or the NCRP portal, allowing faster action to trace and contain financial losses.

Officials said the proposed AI integration is expected to improve call handling, multilingual support, and real-time coordination across agencies, significantly strengthening India’s cybercrime response infrastructure.
