Amit Shah participates in “Namma Ooru Modi Pongal” in Trichy ahead of TN assembly elections

Union Home Minister Amit Shah took part in the “Namma Ooru Modi Pongal” celebrations in Tiruchirappalli on Sunday, as part of a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu. The event, organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) , brought together party workers and local residents to celebrate the traditional Tamil harvest festival, Pongal .

The programme, whose name translates to “Our Town’s Modi Pongal” , reflects the BJP’s effort to link Prime Minister Narendra Modi with local cultural identity, ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April–May 2026 .

At Mannarpuram in Trichy, Shah joined party workers in preparing Pongal, the traditional sweet rice dish, in decorated earthen pots. Hundreds of women participated in the festivities, adding a vibrant touch to the celebrations.

During his visit, Shah also offered prayers at prominent temples in the city, including the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple , a major religious landmark in Tiruchirappalli.

Political observers see Shah’s visit as part of the BJP’s strategic pre-election campaign in a state where the party has historically had limited influence. Speaking to supporters, he highlighted the party’s vision for Tamil Nadu, including the goal of forming an NDA government in the state , and underscored preparations for alliances with regional parties such as the AIADMK to challenge the ruling DMK .

Experts say the event is a classic example of cultural outreach as political strategy . By participating in a widely celebrated festival, the BJP is connecting with voters on an emotional and cultural level, while simultaneously reinforcing its presence in the state. The combination of a high-profile leader, local engagement, and media coverage is aimed at creating visibility and momentum ahead of the elections.

Pongal , which celebrates the harvest and community bonds, provided the perfect backdrop for the BJP to showcase its grassroots efforts and strengthen its political messaging in Tamil Nadu.
