Amit Shah Begins Bengal Visit with Focus on Border Security and New Criminal Laws

Union Home Minister Amit Shah began his three-day visit to West Bengal with a packed schedule centred on border security, governance, and the implementation of India's new criminal laws , underscoring the Centre's focus on strengthening internal security and administrative coordination in the border state.

Shah arrived at Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri on Friday night and spent the night at the Border Security Force's (BSF) North Bengal Frontier Headquarters . His visit comes at a time when border management and law enforcement remain key priorities for the Union government.

On Saturday, the home minister visited the BSF's 18th Battalion Border Outpost at Jumagachh along the India-Bangladesh border. During the visit, he addressed a Prahari Sammelan, interacted with BSF personnel, and participated in a plantation drive. He also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several BSF development projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and enhancing operational capabilities along the border.

Later in the day, Shah travelled to Uttar Kanya, the West Bengal government's branch secretariat in Siliguri, where he chaired a series of review meetings. The discussions covered border management, key administrative issues , and the implementation of the Centre's three new criminal laws. He also chaired a separate meeting on the registration of births and deaths, a key aspect of public administration.

The Union minister is expected to leave for Kolkata in the evening to continue the next phase of his visit.

On Sunday, Shah will chair a high-level review of West Bengal's law and order situation . His itinerary also includes inaugurating the first phase of the 'Museum of Words' at the National Library and laying the foundation stone for Amul Bengal Dairy's curd processing plant at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre .

The visit reflects the Centre's continued emphasis on security preparedness, institutional reforms, and infrastructure development in strategically significant border regions while reinforcing coordination between security agencies and administrative authorities.
