American Detained Near Nepal Border: Who Is Jordan Brown and Why Are His Military Claims Raising Questions?

An American national who claimed to be a former US Navy and Special Forces serviceman has been arrested by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near the Indo-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh after allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal without valid travel documents. The 36 year old, identified as Jordan Brown , is now in judicial custody as Indian authorities verify his identity, investigate his movements, and examine the authenticity of his military background and travel claims.

Brown was detained during a routine patrol by SSB personnel in the Mainihwa area under the Sonauli police station limits in Maharajganj district. Officials said he was intercepted while trying to enter Nepal without authorization. According to the SSB, Brown allegedly attempted to flee during questioning but was caught after a brief chase. Videos circulating on social media showed him being escorted by security personnel with a rope tied around one leg.

During the search, officials recovered Rs 31,460 in cash , two mobile phones, but no passport, visa, or any other valid travel documents. He was later handed over to the Sonauli police for further investigation.

According to Maharajganj Additional Superintendent of Police Siddharth, Brown told investigators that he had travelled to Thailand on a tourist visa, where he allegedly lost his passport. He then claimed to have reached Sri Lanka by sea before entering India through a sea route on November 2, 2025 , after which he lived in Goa for several months. Police said these claims are still being verified.

Investigators have also found inconsistencies in Brown's statements. While one version claimed he entered India by sea after losing his passport, another suggested he had travelled from the United States to Goa only a few months ago before making his way through Bengaluru, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and finally Sonauli.

Brown reportedly told police he had visited nearly 70 countries , studied at the University of California, and served in the US Navy and Special Forces for around six years before leaving military service in 2024. Some officials also said he described himself as a former "Foreign Services" officer, adding to the confusion over his actual background. Authorities have not independently verified any of these claims, and no official confirmation has been received from US authorities.

He also claimed he was travelling to Nepal to meet a Nepalese woman identified only as "Naz", whom he allegedly met in Goa. Brown further stated that he had married an Indian woman from Uttarakhand in October 2024 after meeting her in Italy several years earlier and that she works as a yoga instructor. Police said many of these personal claims are also being verified.

A case has been registered against Brown under Sections 21 and 23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act for illegal stay and attempting to cross an international border without valid documents. Officials have informed the US Embassy , while intelligence and immigration agencies continue to investigate his identity, travel route, and reasons for entering India without documentation.

The arrest comes just months after another American citizen, Matthew VanDyke , was detained near India's Myanmar border in a separate high profile case, drawing renewed attention to foreign nationals attempting unauthorized border crossings into and out of India.
