Ambedkar’s statue unveiled at UNESCO headquarters in Paris

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed profound pride over the unveiling of a bust of Dr B.R. Ambedkar at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, describing the event as a historic tribute to the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. The ceremony coincided with Constitution Day, adding symbolic significance to the occasion.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said the installation of Ambedkar’s bust at one of the world’s foremost cultural and educational institutions was a “matter of immense pride” for every Indian. He noted that Dr Ambedkar’s thoughts and ideals continue to offer “strength and hope to innumerable people”, both within India and globally.

The event also underscores Ambedkar’s international relevance. UNESCO, visited by diplomats, scholars, and cultural representatives from across the world, provides a platform that amplifies his lifelong commitment to social justice, equality, education, and human dignity. The presence of his bust at this institution brings Ambedkar’s philosophy into global discussions on inclusive societies, anti-discrimination policies, and constitutional governance.

As Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, Dr Ambedkar played the most decisive role in shaping India’s Constitution. He introduced key provisions protecting fundamental rights, promoting social and economic democracy, safeguarding minorities, and ensuring the independence of the judiciary. His defence of these provisions in Assembly debates earned him recognition as the Constitution’s chief architect.

Ambedkar’s ideals remain crucial for guiding India’s future policies. His emphasis on equality and justice supports reforms to reduce discrimination and expand access to education and opportunities.
