In a strategic move to enhance user engagement, Amazon has announced the rollout of a dedicated ‘News tab’ on its Prime Video streaming service. By the end of 2025, all U.S. customers will have free access to this new section, which aims to seamlessly combine entertainment and real-time news under one platform.

The News tab will feature a lineup of prominent U.S. news networks, including ABC News Live, CBS News 24/7, CNN Headlines, LiveNOW from Fox, and NBC News NOW, covering a wide array of topics from world and national news to regional updates. With this feature, Amazon seeks to make live news consumption more convenient, keeping users engaged longer on Prime Video while offering a one-stop solution for both entertainment and current events.

Amazon’s initiative stands out in the competitive streaming landscape. Unlike platforms such as Netflix and Disney+, which focus solely on on-demand entertainment, Amazon integrates ‘live news free of charge’ within its existing service. While services like Hulu + Live TV or Peacock offer live news, they often require additional subscriptions or premium tiers, making Amazon’s approach more accessible to a broader audience.

The platform also introduced Sony Pictures Core, a subscription channel available on Prime Video in the U.S. and Canada for $6.99 per month, providing access to a curated selection of Sony movies and shows. This addition underscores Amazon’s dual strategy: expanding both live news accessibility and on-demand entertainment offerings to attract and retain users.

By integrating multiple live news channels into its streaming service, Amazon is creating a comprehensive content hub where subscribers can effortlessly switch between entertainment and current affairs. This unique blend of convenience, free access, and diversity of content positions Prime Video as a stronger competitor in the crowded OTT market.
