Amazon Prime reportedly cancels ₹120 cr deal for Jana Nayagan
The upcoming Tamil political action thriller Jana Nayagan , starring Vijay and directed by H. Vinoth, has reportedly lost a lucrative ₹120 crore digital streaming deal with Amazon Prime Video after facing prolonged certification delays.
According to industry sources, the film had secured the OTT agreement in November 2025. However, repeated hurdles in obtaining clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) have reportedly caused the deal to fall through.
The film was initially scheduled for a Pongal 2026 theatrical release but ran into difficulties during the certification process late last year. While the CBFC reportedly granted the film a U/A rating after recommending several cuts , further complications arose when petitions were filed against the certification and review screenings were delayed. Sources say the situation was worsened by the illness of a committee member, which postponed key review proceedings.
Producers are said to have incorporated the suggested cuts, but the certification process has remained stalled. The film is now expected to undergo another screening on March 17 in an attempt to resolve the pending issues.
The delays have also created uncertainty for theatre owners and distributors, particularly as Jana Nayagan carries significant commercial expectations. Industry estimates suggest cinema exhibitors could face potential losses exceeding ₹100 crore due to the prolonged hold-up and the missed festive release window.
The project holds additional significance as it is widely expected to be the final film of Vijay before he transitions fully into politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.Despite the reports surrounding the cancelled OTT deal and certification challenges, no official statement has been issued so far by the film’s producers, Amazon Prime Video, or Vijay’s team.
