Amazon Confirms 16,000 Layoffs After Accidental Internal Email Leak
Amazon has confirmed it will eliminate 16,000 corporate roles worldwide , marking one of its largest recent workforce reductions, after an internal email about the layoffs was mistakenly circulated to employees before the official announcement. The cuts follow an earlier round of about 14,000 job reductions in October , bringing total corporate layoffs since late last year close to 30,000 roles as the company restructures operations to become leaner and more efficient.
The premature message originated within Amazon Web Services (AWS) . A draft email, written by Colleen Aubrey, a senior vice-president at AWS , was inadvertently attached to a calendar invitation sent to employees. The invite, titled “Send Project Dawn email,” referenced Amazon’s internal code name for the restructuring exercise. Although the invitation was quickly withdrawn, many employees had already seen the contents, revealing that layoffs affecting the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica were underway before formal communication was released.
Amazon later confirmed the workforce reductions as part of a broader effort to reduce bureaucracy , increase ownership and speed up decision-making for customers. Company leadership emphasized that the cuts represent targeted organizational changes rather than the beginning of recurring mass layoffs. Affected employees are being given opportunities to apply for internal openings, while those who do not transition will receive severance packages based on their length of service.
While Amazon operates globally with a workforce of roughly 1.5 million employees , including about 350,000 corporate staff , early internal references and reporting suggest that North America, especially the United States will bear the largest share of the cuts . Canada and Costa Rica were explicitly mentioned in the leaked communication, and additional reports indicate impacts in India and the United Kingdom , particularly within corporate functions, AWS, Prime-related services and operational support teams. The reductions are largely concentrated in white-collar and technology-focused roles , rather than warehouse and logistics operations.
Despite the seriousness of the leak, the incident is not considered a cybersecurity breach . No customer information or internal systems were compromised. Instead, it represents an internal communications failure, a premature disclosure of confidential corporate plans typically handled by HR, legal and internal communications teams, though it still carries reputational and governance risks.
The layoffs come amid CEO Andy Jassy’s continued push to streamline Amazon’s structure and enforce tighter operational discipline. The company has increasingly focused on AI integration, automation, and cost efficiency , while also reshaping its retail strategy. Amazon recently announced it would close many Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores and expand its Whole Foods Market operations, signaling consolidation of its physical grocery presence.
Industry analysts view the job cuts as part of a broader post-pandemic correction in the technology sector, where companies that expanded rapidly are now prioritizing profitability and leaner operations. Roles tied to repetitive processes and layered management structures appear most vulnerable, while demand remains stronger in AI engineering, cloud infrastructure and logistics optimization. The accidental email accelerated attention on the restructuring, but the strategic direction reflects longer-term changes in how large technology firms are reorganizing for a more efficiency-driven phase.
