Amid a sharp early rush compared to previous years , more than 25,000 pilgrims registered within the first two days for this year’s Amarnath Yatra, officials said on Thursday significantly higher than the slower initial registration trends seen in recent editions. The annual pilgrimage to the sacred Amarnath Cave, situated at an altitude of 3,880 metres , is set to begin on July 3 and conclude on August 28 , coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.

Registration, which opened on April 15, witnessed heavy rush at counters across Jammu, with long queues forming outside designated bank branches and online platforms recording brisk participation. Officials noted that 19,402 pilgrims enrolled on the first day alone , reflecting heightened interest in the 57-day pilgrimage.

The yatra will proceed via two routes, the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and the shorter 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district. Devotees chanting “Har Har Mahadev” and “Bum Bum Bholey” were seen waiting patiently to complete registration formalities.

Reviewing preparedness, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a high-level meeting of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board , setting June 20 as the deadline for completing key infrastructure and service arrangements. Authorities have been directed to enhance facilities in anticipation of increased footfall this year.

Key measures include snow clearance by May 15 , road repairs and helipad restoration, improved sanitation systems, and the establishment of 100-bed hospitals at Chandanwari and Baltal . Officials are also focusing on seamless traffic movement , robust telecom connectivity, weather forecasting, and disaster management readiness through an Integrated Command and Control Centre in Srinagar.

The Amarnath Yatra holds profound religious significance for Hindus, as pilgrims undertake an arduous trek to witness the naturally formed ice Shivling , believed to symbolize Lord Shiva. According to tradition, the cave is the site where Shiva is said to have revealed the secrets of immortality to Goddess Parvati, making it one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism .

With large crowds expected, authorities have emphasised coordinated efforts to ensure a safe, smooth, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage for all devotees.
