Amaravati Declared Andhra Pradesh’s Sole Capital as Gazette Notification Issued
In a major development in Andhra Pradesh’s history, Amaravati has been officially recognized as the state’s sole capital . The decision follows the approval of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026 by President Droupadi Murmu . The Central government subsequently issued a gazette notification on Tuesday, giving legal and constitutional clarity to Amaravati’s status. This move brings an end to the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the capital issue.
Under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 , Hyderabad served as the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for ten years . With this period now over, Hyderabad remains exclusively with Telangana. The latest amendment makes a key change by explicitly stating that Amaravati will be the capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The bill progressed quickly through the legislative process. After a resolution was passed in the State Assembly on March 28 , it was approved by the Lok Sabha on April 1 and by the Rajya Sabha the next day, leading to the issuance of the official notification.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu welcomed the development and expressed his happiness. Posting on X, he described it as the realization of a long-standing aspiration of the people. He thanked the President and acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , along with MPs and other leaders who backed the bill.
He also dedicated the achievement to the farmers of the Amaravati region, recognizing their sacrifices . With legal issues now resolved, the government is expected to accelerate construction and infrastructure development in Amaravati. The people of the state, especially farmers in the capital region, are viewing the notification as a historic milestone.
