Aman, Mukul shine with silvers as India wraps Asian wrestling championships with 17 medals
India’s wrestling campaign at the Asian Championships in Bishkek ended on a strong note, with Aman Sehrawat and Mukul Dahiya clinching hard-fought silver medals, taking the country’s overall tally to an impressive 17 medals.
Olympic medallist Aman Sehrawat came close to gold in the men’s 61kg freestyle category but fell short in a thrilling, high-scoring final. Facing South Korea’s Kwang Myong Kim , Aman fought fiercely but eventually lost 10-13 in a bout that kept fans on edge till the final seconds. Despite the defeat, his performance reflected grit, skill, and attacking intent throughout the tournament.
Soon after, Mukul Dahiya stepped onto the mat in the men’s 86kg freestyle final, aiming to convert his strong run into a gold. However, he was outplayed by Iran’s Kamran Ghasempour , who dominated the bout to secure a 7-0 victory, leaving Mukul with a well-earned silver.
India’s medal rush didn’t stop there. In the heavyweight 125kg category, Dinesh delivered a commanding performance in his bronze medal play-off. Displaying sheer dominance, he defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Arslanbek Turdubekov 12-1 by technical superiority, adding another medal to India’s tally.
With this, India concluded the championship with two gold, six silver, and nine bronze medals , underlining the country’s growing depth and consistency in wrestling at the continental level. While the missed golds in the finals may sting, the overall performance signals a promising future, with young wrestlers stepping up on the big stage.
As the team returns home, the focus will now shift to refining performances and converting these close finishes into gold in upcoming global competitions.
