All Services Now in ‘RailOne’
Indian Railways has reached another significant turning point in its digital journey. The UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) app, which served passengers for more than eleven years for booking unreserved tickets, was officially retired by the Railway Ministry from March 1, 2026. In its place, officials have fully implemented the RailOne super app, which offers all railway services on a single platform. From ticket booking and live train tracking to ordering food and registering complaints, everything is now available within one application.
UTS Journey – The First Step Towards Digitalisation
Launched on December 27, 2014, the UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) app was primarily designed for booking general, platform, and season tickets. It significantly reduced the inconvenience of standing in queues at station counters. The app proved especially useful for millions of daily commuters travelling on suburban and local trains in metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
The R-Wallet feature, which allowed passengers to store money in advance, encouraged cashless transactions. With crores of tickets booked through the app, it strengthened the railways’ shift toward digital services.
However, the limitations of UTS gradually became evident. It was restricted to unreserved ticketing. Passengers had to use different apps for various services IRCTC for reserved tickets, NTES for train status, and Rail Madad for complaints. This created inconvenience, leading to growing demand for a single platform providing all railway services.
RailOne – A Comprehensive Super App
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially launched the RailOne app on July 1, 2025. It was developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). After absorbing UTS services completely from March 1, 2026, the app has now emerged as the railways’ ‘master app’.
Key features of RailOne include booking of reserved tickets such as Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, Ladies Quota, and Senior Citizen Quota, along with general, platform, and season tickets, all in one place. Passengers also receive promotional concessions on unreserved ticket payments made through UPI or cards.
The app provides real-time information such as train location, delays, and platform numbers. Passengers can easily check PNR status, coach position, and refund status. It also integrates services such as e-catering for ordering meals during the journey, complaint registration, and emergency assistance.
Additional passenger-friendly features include login through existing UTS and IRCTC accounts, biometric authentication support, and automatic transfer of R-Wallet balances.
Adoption – Early Challenges
Within eight months of its launch, the app recorded more than two crore downloads. Officials said that in February 2026 alone, more than five lakh ticket bookings were recorded per day.
However, during the initial phase, users faced issues such as login problems, payment glitches, and delays in ticket updates. Railway authorities say these issues are being resolved gradually.
Railways Moving Towards an Integrated Future
This move by Indian Railways, in line with the Digital India mission, aims to simplify the passenger experience. By reducing confusion caused by multiple apps and providing integrated services on a single platform, the initiative marks a timely step forward.
While UTS marks the end of an era, RailOne signals the beginning of a more integrated digital phase for Indian Railways. It stands as another example reinforcing the belief that technology is the key to making travel simpler and more efficient.
