Alexander Zverev Sends Germany Into Davis Cup Final 8 With Dominant Victory

Alexander Zverev powered Germany into the Davis Cup Final 8 with a commanding straight-sets victory over Croatia’s Dino Prizmic on Sunday, sealing a 3-1 win in Halle and keeping Germany’s title hopes alive.

The world No. 2 needed just 77 minutes to beat Prizmic 6-2, 6-4 on the indoor hardcourt, delivering another dominant performance in Germany’s qualifying tie.

Zverev, who won the US Open and French Open, gave Prizmic very few opportunities throughout the match. The Croatian, ranked more than 100 places below Zverev, failed to earn a single break point as the German controlled the contest from the start.

The victory also followed Zverev’s impressive performance against Matej Dodig on Saturday, underlining his importance to Germany’s Davis Cup campaign.

Germany had earlier moved within touching distance of qualification when Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz defeated Croatian doubles team Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 7-5, 6-2.

That victory gave Zverev the chance to close out the tie, and he did so without allowing Croatia back into the contest.

Germany will now compete in the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, Italy, in November, where the remaining teams will battle for the prestigious team title.

Britain also secured its place in the Final 8 on Sunday after doubles specialists Henry Patten and Neal Skupski defeated Ecuador’s Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo 6-3, 6-4.

The result completed a 3-0 victory for Britain, which had already taken control of the tie before the decisive doubles match.

With Germany and Britain through, the Davis Cup knockout stage is beginning to take shape, with the November showdown in Bologna set to bring together the leading teams in the competition.
