
Akshay And Vicky Lead India’s Golden Charge At U23 Asian Wrestling Championships
India produced a powerful display at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam, with freestyle wrestlers Akshay T Dhere and Vicky emerging as standout performers by winning gold medals in their respective categories.
Akshay impressed in the 57kg freestyle division , showing strong defensive awareness and tactical discipline in the final against Kazakhstan’s Yelaman Amangeldi. In a closely fought contest, the Indian wrestler maintained composure under pressure and secured a hard-earned 4-2 victory to clinch the gold medal.
Vicky followed with another memorable performance in the 97kg category , where he faced Uzbekistan’s Sherzod Poyonov in a high-intensity final. Displaying strength, aggression and smart counter-attacks, Vicky edged his opponent 7-5 to hand India another gold medal and underline the country’s growing depth in freestyle wrestling.
The Indian women’s team also enjoyed an exceptional campaign, contributing significantly to the medal haul with dominant performances across multiple weight categories.
Muskan captured gold in the 53kg division after defeating Vietnam’s Thi My Linh Nguyen 6-2 in a controlled final. Tapsya produced one of the most dominant wins of the tournament in the 57kg category , pinning Kazakhstan’s Altyn Shagayeva by fall while leading 4-0.
Bhagyashree H. Fand added another gold in the 62kg category with a convincing 4-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Tynys Dubek, while Pulkit continued India’s strong run by winning the 65kg title after defeating opponents from Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.
India also secured a silver medal through Amruta Shashikant Pujari in the 72kg division , where she narrowly lost 2-4 to Mongolia’s Odgerel Edene Ochir in the final.
The performances highlighted India’s rising strength in both men’s freestyle and women’s wrestling at the continental level, with several young wrestlers showcasing the potential to become future stars on the international stage.
