Akbaruddin Owaisi Writes to CM Over Unfulfilled Minority Assurances
Akbaruddin Owaisi, leader of the AIMIM legislature party, criticised the Indian National Congress government in Telangana for failing to implement several promises made to minorities even two years after assuming power. In a letter to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, he urged the government to immediately implement assurances made under the ‘Abhaya Hastham’ minority declaration .
In the letter dated March 5, Owaisi called for a review of the implementation of the Minority Declaration , the Six Guarantees , and other manifesto commitments as the government completes two years in office. He alleged that many promises aimed at the economic empowerment of minorities remain unfulfilled.
He pointed out that although a caste census was undertaken, the deadline to complete it within six months has already passed. Steps to ensure reservations for backward classes and minorities in government jobs, educational institutions and welfare schemes are also yet to begin.
Owaisi recalled that the Congress had promised to raise the minority welfare budget to ₹4,000 crore and introduce a Minority Sub-Plan , but no progress has been seen so far. The proposed ₹1,000-crore subsidised loan scheme for unemployed minority youth and women has also not been implemented.
He further noted that the ‘Abdul Kalam Tohfa-e-Taleem’ scheme promising financial assistance for PhD, PG and degree students is yet to be implemented. Vacancies in institutions such as the Waqf Board , Minority Finance Corporation , Haj House and Urdu Academy also remain unfilled, while the proposed Sikh Minority Finance Corporation has not been established.
Owaisi also urged the government to increase the honorarium for imams and muezzins to ₹12,000 and extend the benefit to pastors and granthis. He called for steps to protect Waqf lands and maintain Muslim and Christian burial grounds.
While welcoming housing support under the Indiramma housing scheme , he asked the government to implement its promise of increasing assistance under the Shaadi Mubarak scheme to ₹1.6 lakh before the next elections.
