Ajit Doval Holds Saudi Talks on Energy Security Amid West Asia Tensions

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Saudi Arabia and held high level meetings with the Kingdom's top leadership to review the progress of bilateral ties, discuss the evolving regional security situation, and strengthen cooperation on energy security and the protection of key maritime corridors amid rising tensions in West Asia.

Doval, who arrived in Riyadh on Monday, met Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, and National Security Advisor Musaed bin Mohammed Al Aiban. According to the Indian Embassy, the discussions covered bilateral relations, the regional situation and other issues of mutual interest. The Saudi Foreign Ministry said both sides also explored ways to deepen the India Saudi strategic partnership, including cooperation on safeguarding energy supplies, securing critical sea lanes and expanding defence and security collaboration.

The visit marks Doval's third trip to Saudi Arabia in 2026, following earlier visits in February and April, reflecting New Delhi's sustained engagement with Gulf partners as regional instability intensifies.

The meetings took place against the backdrop of the continuing US Iran conflict and heightened threats to regional shipping. Yemen's Iran backed Houthi rebels have announced a "maritime embargo" against Saudi vessels in the Bab al Mandab Strait, a move rejected by Riyadh, while disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have increased concerns over global energy flows and trade.

India, which relies heavily on Gulf nations for crude oil imports, has stepped up diplomatic outreach to safeguard energy supplies, ensure the security of vital maritime routes and protect Indian nationals and seafarers. Around 2.6 million Indians live and work in Saudi Arabia, making them the Kingdom's largest expatriate community.
