Ajit Agarkar will continue as the chairman of the senior selection committee after the Board of Control for Cricket in India decided to renew his contract for one more year , with a clear focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup build up.

Under Agarkar’s leadership since October 2023, Indian cricket has enjoyed a strong run in global tournaments. The teams selected during this period reached four ICC finals between October 2023 and March 2026 , winning three of them, including two T20 World Cups and one ICC Champions Trophy . This consistent performance made his continuation a widely expected decision within cricketing circles.

A senior BCCI source clarified that Agarkar did not personally seek an extension. The source explained that a selector is eligible to serve up to four years in either the junior or senior selection committee , with a combined limit of five years across both. Hence, the board has renewed his contract rather than calling it an extension.

Those close to Agarkar have maintained that he preferred to let the board evaluate the performance of the selection panel rather than actively push for a continuation.

The decision also reflects the BCCI’s emphasis on stability ahead of the 50-over World Cup cycle . During his tenure, the selection committee has taken several bold and sometimes difficult calls. These include managing the Test retirements of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma , and gradually reducing the role of experienced pacer Mohammed Shami in international cricket.

The committee also showed willingness to back form over reputation, notably by leaving out Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad and instead selecting in-form wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan .

With Agarkar continuing in charge, the focus now shifts firmly toward long-term squad planning for another ICC cycle.
