Air pollution peaks in Hyderabad on New Year’s day as average AQI hits 339

Residents of Hyderabad rang in the New Year only to wake up to worsening air pollution in the city on Thursday. Following a night of high-decibel celebrations and extensive firecracker use, the city experienced thick smog that persisted well into the afternoon.

At midnight on January 1, 2026 , Hyderabad recorded an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 339 , categorised as ‘severe’ . The situation worsened with morning traffic, and the AQI peaked at 353 at 6 a.m. , remaining in the severe category. Even the lowest AQI of the day was 230 , classified as ‘poor’ , which experts equate to the air pollution caused by smoking 20–30 cigarettes per day .

The sharp rise in pollution levels was attributed to a combination of factors. New Year celebrations, including firecrackers , released large amounts of smoke and particulate matter, while vehicular emissions during the morning hours added to the existing pollutants.

Environmental experts note that air quality in Hyderabad typically deteriorates sharply during festival and celebration periods , as fireworks and public gatherings contribute significantly to pollution. The smog often lingers into the following day , affecting residents’ health, particularly those with respiratory conditions.

With AQI levels in the severe range, authorities have urged citizens to limit outdoor activities , wear masks if stepping outside, and take precautions to safeguard their health.
